REAL WEDDING: BRITTANY AND BRENDAN
Vancouver couple Brittany and Brendan asked us to plan their big hometown Toronto wedding reception for all their friends and family. The couple wanted a party with lots of food, drink, dance, and merriment, but the one thing that they did not need was a formal wedding ceremony! In true west-coast fashion, instead of getting married in TO, they hiked up a mountain in B.C. and tied the knot in the wilderness at sunset. How amazing is that?! We were stoked to help this lovely couple plan the party of their dreams, and in order to pay homeage to their wedding ceremony, created a stunning sunset-inspired wedding reception for them at Toronto venue The Symes.
Wedding Reception at West End Toronto Venue The Symes
Brittany and Brendan’s wedding reception took place at The Symes, a restored art deco building in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, which is a favourite of ours at Mad Bash. We love it because it’s a “blank canvas” venue that gives us free reign with design, while still having cool original features. Plus it’s centrally located downtown, but not so far into the core that it’s challenging for guests to reach. And, it has parking!
The couple went to Magwood Park in Toronto’s west end for their first look and portraits.
Brittany and Brendan wanted to pay homage to their B.C. wedding ceremony, so we wove a sunset theme through every aspect of their wedding design, starting with a beautiful colour palette of yellow, peach, orange, light pink, and lavender. From a sunset backdrop to a colourful dance floor, guests could feel the warmth radiating from the room the moment they walked in.
colourful Sunset Seating Chart and Photo Backdrop
A focal point of the reception was a beautiful and funky sunset backdrop that functioned as both a seating chart and a photo backdrop. Fabricated by the Mad Bash team, it was an 8’x8’ layered wooden backdrop painted with different colours of the sunset. Guests’s names and table assignments were vinyled in white, and at the base of the backdrop, we fashioned a 3-dimensional sunburst, and decorated it with a gorgeous floral arrangement.
CREATIVE WEDDING STATIONERY AND DETAILS
Brittany and Brendan’s wedding design featured lots of fun printed details. We used wine glass tags as place card substitutes, and the couple created a custom illustration of their rescue dog which were printed on matchboxes for super cute little take-home gifts! The welcome sign, and bar and guestbook signs, were written in funky handwritten fonts and printed in fun sunset colours.
WARM AND MODERN FURNITURE AND TABLETOP RENTALS
With The Symes being a blank-space venue, it was up to us to rent tables and chairs. We went with natural wood and cane furniture to bring a warm, natural and outdoor vibe to The Symes. We used a mix of banquet tables and rounds and paired them with both natural and natural/white cane chairs. For place settings, we chose versatile peach chargers, gold-rimmed glassware, modern gold flatware, and vibrant coral napkins. Sunset-coloured taper candles in modern white holders, and a mixture of bud and ikebana vases with modern and trendy florals peppered the tables.
COLOURFUL SUNSET-inspired CHECKEred DANCE FLOOR
To really bring the sunset theme home, we created a colourful checkerboard vinyl dance floor in the couple’s colour palette, which pulled the room together and anchored the space. Wanting all details to be perfect, we also brought in our own ribbed white bars and bar backs, which we glammed up with flower arrangements, bar menus, candles and polaroid cameras.
wedding planners for seamless events and modern design
We designed this unique and creative wedding with our Signature Planning package, which is also known more technically as our Design and Month-Of Coordination Package. This package is great for couples who need help bringing visual cohesion to their celebration, but who would prefer to book their venue and service-based vendors, like the photographer and caterer, themselves. Not only do we procure all of their aesthetic vendors, but in the final six weeks we take all logistics off their plate and manage the wedding from top to bottom. If you would like to learn more about our wedding planning packages, please reach out! We’d love to hear from you!
